What is ThumbnailSafeZone?
ThumbnailSafeZone is a free online thumbnail checker for YouTube and TikTok creators. It shows how your thumbnail looks with the real interface on top: duration badge, progress bar, hover icons, titles, captions and action buttons. It runs entirely in your browser, so your image is never uploaded.
Feature highlights
- YouTube thumbnail safe zone overlay with a duration badge safe area marker
- Test your YouTube thumbnail mobile view, desktop home and watch page layouts
- TikTok and YouTube Shorts thumbnail overlay preview (9:16)
- Export a 1280×720 JPG and check the 2 MB YouTube file size limit
- Free, no sign-up, 100% client-side and private
Why do I need a thumbnail safe zone?
A thumbnail never appears alone. YouTube and TikTok place a duration badge, hover icons, progress bars, captions and action buttons on top of it. Text or faces under those elements are hidden, which costs you clicks. Previewing the real layout before you publish lets you fix problems while they are cheap to fix.
Mobile first
Most views happen on phones where the thumbnail is small. Large, high-contrast text with plenty of margin stays readable.
Truncated titles
Feed titles are cut after about two lines. Put the strongest words first so the cut never removes the hook.
Private by design
All processing happens locally with HTML5 Canvas. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account.
How to use the thumbnail previewer
- Upload your image or paste it from the clipboard.
- Enter your real title, channel name, views and duration.
- Switch between mobile feed, desktop home, watch page and Shorts / TikTok previews.
- Turn on safe zones and move any important element out of the red areas.
- Download the preview to share for feedback, or export a 1280×720 JPG ready to upload.
Where do YouTube duration badges appear?
The duration badge sits in the bottom-right corner on the mobile feed, desktop home, search results and the related videos sidebar. A red progress bar runs along the bottom edge for videos a viewer has partly watched, and on desktop a row of hover icons (watch later, add to queue) appears at the top-right. Shorts and TikTok use a different layout: action buttons on the right, captions at the bottom and a navigation bar at the top.

Frequently asked questions
Why do I need a thumbnail safe zone?
YouTube and TikTok draw their own interface on top of your image: a duration badge, hover icons, progress bars, captions and action buttons. Anything important placed under those elements gets hidden, so a safe zone keeps faces, text and logos visible.
Where do YouTube duration badges appear?
The duration badge sits in the bottom-right corner of the thumbnail on the mobile feed, desktop home page, search results and the related videos sidebar. Keep text and key details out of that corner.
What is the best dimension for YouTube thumbnails?
Use 1280x720 pixels (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide, saved as JPG or PNG and under 2 MB.
Does ThumbnailSafeZone upload my image?
No. Everything runs in your browser using HTML5 Canvas. Your image never leaves your device.
What are safe zones for TikTok and YouTube Shorts?
On vertical 9:16 video, keep key content away from the top bar, the right-hand action buttons and the bottom caption area.
Can I use WebP images?
You can preview WebP here, but YouTube thumbnail uploads accept JPG, PNG and GIF, so export a 1280x720 JPG before uploading.
